Here are some additional study tips from Daniel C Levine, owner of Big Apple Tutoring & Exclusive Education
For adults that have not been in school for many years, studying, memorization, and test preparation can be quite a challenge.
Organization is key!
- Keep notebooks, assignments, class notes, and handouts organized and user friendly. Have specific folders and notebooks for each course (no loose pages and no combining subjects).
- Use a highlighter to highlight key points. Often a teacher's handout (and your notes) can look overwhelming and confusing when you get home. Highlight the important facts on the page - it becomes less intimidating and has your mark on it!
- Use notecards! Especially for preparation for fact based exams. Buy a package of notecards. One on one side, write the question. On the other side, write the answer. Quiz yourself. It really works!
- Ask questions in class, and ask the instructor for clarification and help. Chances are, if you don't understand something - the guy sitting next to you doesn't either.
- If you are studying for a particular standardized exam - find past exams from previous years. Questions tend to repeat and this can help focus your studies.
